QuestionQuestion:japanese learners news publication?

I'm learning Japanese and I want to read Japanese publications to help me practice reading, but I can't read kanji. Is there some sort of newspaper or magazine for people learning the language? I can only find newspapers and magazines in English or Kanji-heavy Japanese.

  • The Hiragana Times (posted below) is good for this.

Also, depending on the vocabulary you are after, childrens comic books are also a possibility. Dependig on the grade level you can determine the number of kanji that appear, and many have furigana (small hiragana with the reading of the kanji).

  • Yes, surprisingly there is. Hiragana Times is a bilingual magazine (english and japanese) that is written in hiragana and katakana only. When Kanji are given in the text, it is transliterated into hiragana above it. And of course, the articles are fully translated into english on the same page. Its a great tool to supplement your japanese class. ALthough, you wont find much headline-worthy news in Hiragana Times, it is very useful when learning the language, and the articles are very interesting also. Check it out!
