Question:

fishing license

I'v been living in Japan for a while now, and I'm curious: do I need a fishing license to fish recreationally? I want to go out to a lake next weekend with my son, but besides fishing gear and other supplies, I have no idea what I need to do to get ready for this trip.

  • There is very little hassle in Japan about recreational fishing. If you plan on fishing in freshwater ponds or lakes, and it sounds like you are, then you don't need to worry about a licese. You also don't need a license if you want to fish off a saltwater coast. The only places you might need to get a fishing license for are the rivers, but you'll have to check the specific city governments for the details. So for now, I recommend that you stay away from the rivers.

Have fun with your son, and make sure you don't get your lines tangled! Fishing equipment and bait is ridiculously expensive in Japan, so be extra careful where you cast your lines.
