Question:

Nihongo

I'm moving to Japan this summer, and I'm worried about language problems. I've heard that most Japanese people don't speak any English, and of course I can't speak a word of Japanese. I'd like to know what other people's experiences have been in this respect. Also, is it easy to pick up the language while you're there?

  • in my experience it's not so hard to get by without english. most important signs are in both english and japanese, and a lot of japanese people can speak or at least understand a little bit of english. i've been here 10 months and i haven't picked up much of the language myself, but i can't really say i've tried. i know people who are going to japanese classes, and they all tell me that it's a difficult language to learn.
