  • You can only drive on an international driving permit for the first 12 months. After that you are required by law to change over to a Japanese license which, depending on your country of origin, can be a simple process or a real pain in the neck. US license holders have to take a practical test, so fall into the latter category.

  • No, you can't. You need an international driving permit to be able to drive in Japan. Overseas licenses are not accepted.
