Question:

Obligation (giri) Chocolate

On Valentine’s Day I received chocolate from a co-worker. I understand that in Japan on Valentine's Day females give chocolate to male friends and colleagues and on White Day males give chocolate to female friends and colleagues. My confusion lies in the fact that I am a female and I received chocolate on Valentine's Day from a male. Does this action have an ulterior meaning and if so, what should I do about it?

  • I don't think it would have any ulterior meaning that you got chocolates. Maybe the person giving you the chocs knows that in other countries the custom is different. I think it was most likely that he was just being friendly.
