Samantha - Thanks for the information. I have looked into serviced apartments, and although they are great, they are a too expensive for my budget.
Last Samurai - This does seem to be the case. I live in Osaka and I want to be in the city in some place livable. I have looked into "No Deposit" apartments and they have all been, as you say, old, incoveniently located and/or have definite drawback that made them unattractive.
Thanks for the replies!

There are lots of real estate agents who don't require key money these days. There's usually some catch though. Basically the apartments that don't require key money are either old, incoveniently located or have some other drawback that makes them undesirable.

Why don't you try living in a serviced apartment? You don't have to pay key money, and the deposit is not that large and you get it back when you leave.
That's really the best option for avoiding key money, I think :)
