Question:

Rubbish

I have just moved to Nagoya city, and I am really confused about the rubbish disposal system.
I know that paper has to be separated from burnable rubbish - but what does a receipt count as? I heard that is not "paper" but burnable! Please advise.

  • Actually, in Nagoya there is recyclable paper too. If paper has the paper symbol on it, is should be collected with other paper items and put in a blue recyclable bag. For example, receipts and scraps of paper (including envelopes) are burnable, but tissue boxes are recyclable.

For more information on what is recyclable and what is not, Nagoya City produces a useful booklet called the “Nagoya Living Guide”. It includes a section on rubbish, but I think you might also find it useful for your life in Nagoya:

  • From my experience all paper, including receipts, are classed as burnable. ^-^
