Gujo Hachiman is a little town in Gifu Prefecture, on the highway that leads to Takayama. You can walk through caves, climb to a castle, wade in a river, and discover various shops, but most importantly, at this time of year you can join in the Bon Dancing that goes all night, for 4 nights. This is the event that really put Gujo Hachiman on the map!

4. Last Swim of Summer

Iwayado park in Seto is famous for its cool breezes and green leaves in summer, and in autumn it's ablaze in red, orange and yellow. Shops and picnic areas line the banks of the small river, and in summer there's even a swimming pool that's free to get into, right next to the river. The depth of the river is perfect for little ones, so parents can relax in the shade while kids have fun in the water. It's hard to get to, so follow the Google Map.
