1. Want to Give a Kid a Smile for Christmas? Volunteer at Santa & Friends Nagoya
Categories: Events

Are you interested in helping less fortunate children over this coming Christmas Holiday Season? We here at H&R Consultants and Japan Info Swap are very interested in volunteer activities, and we would like to get you involved in some of the charity events we participate in. This group is one of our favorites; Santa & Friends Nagoya is an informal group of Japanese and foreign ex-pats who arrange yearly gift giving Christmas parties for Nagoya City based orphanages. Santa & Friends volunteers are good-hearted people interested in showing their Christmas spirit, if this describes you too there is a very informal dinner scheduled to bring experienced participants together with new faces who want to be involved this year. The dinner takes place at Sarmale, Nagoya’s only Romanian restaurant, on Saturday, October 23 • 6:00pm - 9:00pm. I do not have information on the cost of the dinner, but it is not a fundraising event, so I would expect it to be a reasonable price. If you would like to be involved in this fantastic experience please send an email to santaandfriendsnagoya@gmail.com requesting more information, or letting them know that you plan to attend the dinner, and maybe I will see you there!

MEDICAL RESOURCES IN TOKYO

To begin with the most basic, there are two major emergency numbers in Japan. Dialing 110 will connect you with the police, while 119 will connect you with the fire department in case of emergency, fire, injury or illness. If you need immediate emergency assistance, that is the way to get it. Emergency services suggest that you practice dialing emergency numbers before you need them. In a stressful situation, you will lose a lot of your coordination, and dialing will become difficult, let alone remembering the number in Japan. For your personal protection and safety, it is a good idea to pre-program those numbers into your phone and label them clearly as FIRE and POLICE. It may sound silly, but it will save you precious time when you, or someone else, really need it.

There are more English speaking doctors in private practice, clinics and large hospitals in Japan than you might think, but health care systems vary among countries, so even though your doctor speaks English it is a good idea to visit the clinic or hospital in your area prior to having an illness. This will give you a chance to check out the medical facilities in advance, get familiar with the registration process, and meet your doctor before the flu turns you into, well, a much less pleasant and patient person.

Hospitals and clinics included on this list range from “English friendly” locations where only some of the staff speak English, to clinics specializing in foreigners whose English speaking doctors studied abroad, or may be foreign themselves, and are accustomed to providing care to foreign patients. These specialized clinics often allow you to make appointments in advance with a specific doctor, a practice not usually available in large Japanese hospitals. It is best to start with one of these clinics if you are seeking medical attention, and get a referral to a major hospital if required.

3. Japan's 2010 Census and Fun Population Facts
Categories: Life in Japan

If you have been in Japan for a while, you may already be aware that the Japanese government conducts a population census every five years, and 2010 is the next scheduled count. Everyone residing in Japan is required to respond to the questionnaire, and the Bureau of Statistics promises that responses will not be used in any way for immigration control, police investigations. All information gathered will be used for statistical purposes only, and privacy is guaranteed. The data collected from the Population Census will be used as a baseline for city planning and other measures which benefit foreign residents as well as Japanese citizens, and all residents are asked to cooperate in the effort!

The census will officially begin on October 1, 2010, but census workers will begin distributing forms directly, door to door, in late September. Forms are available in 27 languages, so if you require a survey in a language other than Japanese you can ask the visiting census workers for one, or get one from your local ward office’s Statistics & Election office in the General Administrative Section (総務課 souma-ka).

More information is available from the Bureau of Statistics Website

4. What Are You Soing This Sunday? Missing Out On Something, Perhaps?

The summer heat is finally starting to die down, and it is once again safe to go outside. To celebrate that, I thought I might suggest an itinerary for you for this weekend, Sunday, September 26, specifically. There are two events on Sunday that would keep you happily busy from 12-10 about 4,000.

Beginning at 12:00, the folks over at RAN Magazine are hosting a French BBQ in Shonai Ryokuchi Koen. The BBQ scene is pretty stale generally, but the addition of Chef Denis Salmon makes this an event worth trying out. Denis is a relatively recent arrival to the Nagoya community, but his passion and skill in the kitchen are a welcome addition, and this is a great time to find out why! The set menu is too long to list here, and includes all you can drink. The price is 3,500 if you want to drink alcohol, 3,000 if you do not, and you must make reservations to participate: reserve your spot today!

French BBQ
Sunday, September 26 • 12:00pm - 7:30pm
Location : Shonai Ryokuchi Koen

The second event on Sunday is definitely a Nagoya classic. Nagoya Swings is an international social/interest group based in Nagoya that is dedicated to swing dance in its many styles including: West Coast, East Coast, Lindy Hop, Charleston, Rock Step, etc...The group meets at least once a month, and offers dance lessons to anyone who is interested. You don't need a partner, just a will to dance. Daniel Ostrander has been running Nagoya Swings for a number of years, and has built up quite a dedicated community around a passion for swing dancing, and the great group of people who consistently show up and dance the night away.

There is no better time to drop in on this community than this Sunday. You will have to leave the BBQ a bit early, as the monthly swing workshop begins at 6, but after consuming all that haughty cuisine in the sun, you should be ready by then to do something else by then. Whether you are an expert in swing, or generally associate the word with an axe or hammer, you can enjoy this event. Swing dance lessons are available; just show up at the appropriate time slot for your skill level, pay Shooters 500, and you are golden.

Lesson Schedule
Beginners I: for new students 18:00 19:00:
Beginners II: review & learn new steps 19:00 ~ 20:00:
Open Dance Party: 20:00 – 23:00:

6. Korankei Fall Color Viewing in November
Categories: Japan

One of the most famous spots in Japan to see the changing of the fall leaves is right here near Nagoya. Korankei, near Toyota City, offers views of 4,000 maple trees exploding with vibrant red, yellow, and orange leaves as the trees begin to shed their summer clothes in preparation for the long winter. It is best to arrive at Korankei in the early evening during the latter part of November. The trees will be in full color by then, and will be lit from below by floodlights, giving the area a magical atmosphere where many couples can be seen walking hand in hand under the trees. The light up begins November first, and the hours are from 6-9.

If you are coming by car take route 153 from Toyota city to Asuke City. There is always a lot of traffic during the month of November, and it may take you quite some time to get there and parked before you can enjoy the scenery, but it is worth the trek!
